T-Mobile, a long-time customer of TIBCO, is a great example of how a huge organization with a lot of legacy architecture can successfully go through a digital transformation. With the help of TIBCO and HCL technologies, T-Mobile (also known by their marketing moniker “the Uncarrier”) has experienced tremendous growth, going from serving 15 million customers to 72 million customers in the last few years. That requires a lot of infrastructure. And you need to constantly ensure that everything is working. How do you make that shift to focus on new application architecture while still satisfying the customers you have?
According to T-Mobile, it’s been a journey. They had a big legacy system and couldn’t scale. It was very rigid. They had over 800 servers, with lots of silos, and very messy deployments. They were always worried about capacity and monitoring and it would take six to seven months to prepare for any big event, like a new iPhone launch. When something like that happened, they would have to stay all night to do things like open firewalls, deploy new code, rack and stack new hardware, etc.
T-Mobile needed to break down their monolithic architecture and change the culture on the people side, too. HCL’s Adept Framework was crucial for accelerating T-Mobile’s microservices journey. The Adept Framework is basically an accelerator (or a template of a solution) and best practices for quickly and easily building microservices architecture to scale digital innovation.
T-Mobile succeeded in their evolution and something that used to take 6 months to prepare for, they did in a matter of weeks. Now that’s digital transformation. Currently, T-Mobile is handling millions of transactions per day via TIBCO. There are a hundred systems talking to each other seamlessly, massively expanding the exchange of data across systems.
One of the most interesting stories is how TIBCO and HCL helped T-Mobile speed to market the iPhone X last year. For the launch, T-Mobile was able to sustain the increased volume of almost 10-fold during pre-order. Something that would have previously taken months to prepare for, they were ready in under a month. In the webinar, you’ll hear how they made it happen.
