Predicting Crime Events in Santa Cruz

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Thanks to Ashwin Jayaprakash for pointing out this New Scientist piece on Santa Cruz (California) Police Dept trialling some software suggesting where they should be policing based on past crime events (and their location, time, and type). Sort of CEP for workflow. One wonders if the algorithm for determining possible crimes might also need to be adjusted for the new feedback mechanism caused by police deterrence effects on the data.

And as Santa Cruz seems indelibly linked to beach games, thanks to Ashwin for giving me the long looked-for excuse to post a beach volleyball photo on this blog!
