Transform 2014: The Value of Shared Experiences

Reading Time: 2 minutes

We all go to industry conventions and events, but do you remember a particular presentation a year from now? You will if it is pretty impactful.

The MaraDrill presentation during TIBCO’s Transform world tour last year had this affect on me. Somebody asked me about it just yesterday (this is true—I was on an analyst call).  Their use of Spotfire on top of OSI PI made quite an impression. And then there were the presentations from Chevron and Apache, which caused so much debate and so many questions.

Using Analytics in Energy

The theme for Transform Energy this year is “We’re doing this with Spotfire, what have you done?” There is genuine curiosity about what people have achieved by connecting and mashing up all sorts of data sources and getting a variety of new insights. And that same curiosity lies in the Spotfire team too; when we see what some of the oil and gas companies have done with our product we also get those “Wow!” moments.

Analytics Aren’t Just for Oil Fields

One particularly memorable moment last year was seeing the Opportune Netback analysis demonstrating that some petroleum buyers just don’t seem to care what the price is, resulting in negative elasticity of demand. The devil is in the detail, and often the devil will assume a pleasing shape in a Spotfire visualization.

Two years ago, our oil and gas customers came to us and said they wanted better mapping capabilities, and it is striking just how many of the Transform demonstrations will be looking at oil field and reservoir analyses as well as depictions of physical plant and machinery: drill rigs and bits, drill paths, compressors, pumps, and of course pipelines. In 2012 we added Maporama to provide these capabilities.
