How Business Intelligence and Data Analytics Professionals Used Twitter in August

Reading Time: 3 minutes

It’s time for a wrap up of how business intelligence and data analytics pros used Twitter in August. Our monthly feature is loaded with a few awards, interesting reads, thoughtful tweets and a few cool things to check out.

Let’s kick off with the awards for these esteemed business intelligence and data analytics pros.

Best Twitter Handle & Quote

@mathematicsprof is our Best Twitter Handle of the month. While we can’t locate the name of the dignified PhD, it’s clear his Twitter handle is pretty darn cool. And what do you think of this quote from the professor, “Nowadays statistics, when analyzing online data, i

s apt to be given sexy names like data analytics, data profiling.”

Most Retweeted

Each month, we run an analysis of data analytics on Twitter with the Topsy analytics tool. It gives us a good gauge of what’s happening in the world of data analytics on Twitter. This month, the most retweeted post shows that big data geeks are looking to unseat Don Draper and his Mad Men comrades as the kings of the advertising world.

Our new breed of ad guys and gals knows a bit more about how to glean customer behavior from online actions than they do about three-martini lunches. Jeff Bertolucci’s post for InformationWeek gives us one more reason why it’s cool to be a bit geeky.

Most Retweeted Spotfire Post

Our post “Why Marketers Need to Play Nice with Analytics” was the most shared piece we produced last month. Thanks for sharing the love and if you missed it, it’s a nice primer on why marketers should assemble big data teams to overcome the challenges executives and sales are facing with the deluge of data.

Data Sampling – A Dying Practice?

Stephen Swoyer, a TDWI contributor, wrote an interesting piece on where big data analytics is taking us – away from sampling. Check out this interesting look at how big data analytics is “unprecedented” in its use and how sampling, which was considered a flawed but required practice with large data sets, is now moving into history books.

Data Analytics Changing Video Creation Forever?

Sarah Kessler, associate editor at Fast Company, discusses how “data is helping mold decisions about everything from hip-hop dance moves to throat-slitting horror gore in a recent post.” She writes that the content of Internet video publishers lives and dies by the numbers – numbers that Nielsen ratings will never be able to match. It’s well worth a read to see how data analytics is fueling the four billion hours of content being watched on YouTube each month.

New Big Data News Source

This doesn’t quite fall into the August happenings, but it’s too cool not to share. Tech Republic has just launched its Big Data Analytics blog. So far, there are only a few posts up, but it’s yet another place for us data geeks to get our insights and opinions on our favorite topic.
