The power of private social networking is how easy it is for anyone in the company to provide feedback. Remember the old way of doing this, by writing your comment on a piece of paper and dropping it into a box? This was definitely what companies did in the 90s and some even today. The real beauty of private social networking is the simple ability for anyone in the organization to provide feedback or state their opinion. I have seen many organizations adopt enterprise social. Most are realizing there is a real need for keeping the lines of communication open and transparent. Not only does this benefit the employee, but also top management. Executives are now more in tune with what’s happening in their organization, since they can now see and hear the feedback first hand. Expanding the communication lines to enable your employees to voice their opinions, will result in cultural change. But, this is a good thing. Remember the old knowledge management problem where we have an increasing number of employees retiring in the next 5 years and a cohort of younger workers that need to be brought up to speed? Companies embracing enterprise social are more open to sharing information. New employees post questions and receive answers from more senior managers. Knowledge transfer and employee on-boarding is happening in a fraction of the time. With over 50% of organizations turning to enterprise social, it makes sense that companies are willing to take the plunge to become more open and transparent within their organization.
