The Rise of Business Analytics

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Excellent question poised in a June 9 NetworkWorld.com article by the President of IT and Management at Babson College – “What Does Business Analytics Mean?”  This new blog at NetworkWorld.com is entitled “Masters of Business Analytics” and early returns from our team indicate that this is a good one to watch.  If you are interested in Business Analytics, you will want to bookmark this site.

We here at Spotfire Central have given the subject of Business Analytics a lot of thought.  We agree with some of the fine points made in this article including:

  • The notion that traditional business intelligence had a heavy focus on reporting
  • There is a need for more granularity in definitions surrounding the work we do and applying “Business Analytics” focuses some of the granularity on “quantitative analytics”
  • That whether we call “it” business intelligence, business analytics or something else, the end game is to “enable people in an organization to make better decisions improve processes, and achieve desired outcomes.”

What are your thoughts on Business Analytics?  What does it mean to you?
