A brief but interesting article in Information Week says that privacy fears by employees and policy rules by companies are among the biggest obstacles to corporate search that could unlock organizational knowledge. Employees don’t want their searches viewed by the IT Department and company rules on data security stymie enterprise search and business intelligence. More than 500 companies surveyed found that fewer than one in four had an enterprise search system in use.It looks like two steps forward, and one step back considering all the attention being paid to ‘cloud computing’ and collaboration or social interaction inside and outside the enterprise, the inability to search – or more importantly to FIND – key details either on the Web or your internal network . That’s why the companies that are successful understand the value of analytics and the knowledge it produces. Given the increasing role search and analytics are playing in sharing data from different locations, across departments and various organizational levels, this year’s Gilbane Group conference should be especially interesting, Dec 2-4 in Boston.
