San Francisco is one of the few cities on the West Coast that was designed before the automobile, and it’s easy to tell. With tightly packed streets and alleys, it’s a walker’s paradise. San Francisco has a unique blend of historic and modern architecture. Victorian houses stand next to modern masterpieces of steel and glass. Here are some of the most famous buildings in S.F.

    The Transamerica Pyramid

In a city with tight height regulations, the Transamerica tower is the tallest at 853 feet. Designed by William Pereira and completed in 1972, its pyramid shape provides an interesting addition to the S.F. skyline. Though the Transamerica Corporation has long since vacated the building, it retains its name. It’s currently the home of a number of financial services companies.

    The Painted Ladies

On the edge of Alamo Square, you’ll find some of San Francisco’s most famous homes, the Painted Ladies. Intricate woodwork and pastel colors define the look of these Victorian and Edwardian-style homes. If you’re a fan of ‘90s sitcoms, you may recognize these houses from the intro to Full House.

    The Palace of Fine Arts

When the Palace of Fine Arts was built as part of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, it represented the rebirth of San Francisco following the 1906 earthquake, but it’s come to signify much more. A favorite of couples, The Palace of Fine Arts is a peaceful place that combines nature and architecture, with stalwart columns standing next to towering Australian eucalyptus trees.
