The Gas Pipeline Company (“GPC”), a leader in natural gas transmission with more than 5,800 miles of transmission pipeline in the Midwest and Mid-Continent regions, has to contend with continuous gas flow and demand cycles, including the real-time and critical nature of gas delivery. GPC replaced legacy C-based EDI solution with TIBCO BusinessConnect Container Edition to achieve the elasticity and NAESB compliance required for modern, real-time gas transmission. They turned to Behaim ITS (a System Integrator) to implement TIBCO BusinessConnect Container Edition.

What Are the Benefits of Transitioning to TIBCO BusinessConnect Container Edition?

GPC decided to transition from their legacy C-based EDI solution to TIBCO BusinessConnect Container Edition, integrated with TIBCO BusinessWorks as the integration backend, based on a cloud-native Kubernetes architecture on Azure. This solution was specifically chosen to support real-time elastic demand and provide horizontal scalability, ensuring the infrastructure could flex according to the business’s operational needs.

Behaim ITS helped GPC implement the migration by executing the transition in waves. Critical customers’ go-lives were spread across different waves to mitigate risks. This process included:

  • Enforcing strict NASB standard compliance and certificate validation to close security and document compliance gaps.
  • Connecting approximately 28 to 30 trading partners via X12 over HTTPS, and onboarding them using the TIBCO BusinessConnect Partner Portal.
  • Standardizing backend integration using TIBCO BusinessWorks with XML format.

Key Operational Results of Modernizing EDI with TIBCO

After, on BusinessConnect CEBefore, on home-grown system
Standards complianceDocuments are validated against X12 guidelines, ensuring accuracy and avoiding downstream issuesMany downstream issues resulted because errors were not detected upstream, causing countless hours of research and correction
SecurityTransmission and document certificates are consistently checkedCertificates were not consistently checked, violating the company’s own security policy
ScalabilityNew transaction processing engine pods can easily be spun up (or brought down) in the cloud as demand surges (or calms)Not easy to scale out or in at all

The cloud-native environment has established a secure, stable, and highly scalable operation, effectively modernizing GPC’s B2B/EDI capabilities while ensuring the reliability required for their gas distribution operations. Onboarding of new trading partners is now done efficiently using the partner portal.

Why TIBCO for EDI?

TIBCO BusinessConnect is a B2B and EDI integration solution capable of processing millions of secure transactions per day with zero downtime across pharma, logistics, retail & CPG, energy, and government. Its container edition (BCCE) is designed for cloud-native Kubernetes deployment, allowing for efficient onboarding of trading partners and standardized document exchange. TIBCO BusinessConnect is future-proofed and optimized for lower TCO, focusing on a unified TIBCO control plane and AI-ready architecture.
