How BI and Data Analytics Pros Used Twitter in March

Analytics-and-BI-on-TwitterWelcome to our monthly recap of how BI and data analytics pros used Twitter in March. This month we have a new tool for recognizing the most influential posts on data analytics on Twitter, a beta search feature for data analytics experts according to Twitter mentions, and a few articles you may have missed.

Let’s start with some Twitter analytics.

Top Data Analytics Stories on Twitter in March

data analytics mentions on TwitterAs you can see in the graphic above (which we generated from Topsy’s analytics tool) there were many mentions of data analytics throughout the month of March. The interactive visualization has several data points where you can find the hottest stories (by number of mentions). Here are a few we found interesting:

  • The Data Analytics of Super Tuesday – This was our recap of Super Tuesday. It received a lot of attention over at SmartData Collective (@smartdataco) and 955 Twitter mentions.
  • How BI and Data Pros Used Twitter in February – Another big Twitter favorite was our monthly recap at 1,725 mentions.
  • Are Vanity Metrics Making Your Organization Sick? – This article from George Weiner, CTO at DoSomething.org, is not focused on the BI or data analytics industries; it’s focused on the value we can generate by using analytics to gauge the health of our organizations. Well worth a read for anyone who uses data to make decisions.
  • Three Smart Takes on Big Data – This post from Forbes’ managing editor (Tech & Wealth) Bruce Upbin was mentioned more than once across the Twittersphere and in our Twitter analytics from Topsy. With 1,421 mentions, this story received Topsy’s top story mention three separate times. And it’s well worth the read. It breaks down the importance of backing big data strategies with good business questions. There are two videos that recap Forbes’ recent Data-Driven event worth viewing as well.
  • 3 Ways ‘Big Data Analytics’ Will Change Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) – It seems March was the month of big data’s value to organizations on Twitter and this is yet another post that discusses that value. In this post, Bernard Marr, a bestselling author and founder/CEO of the Advanced Performance Institute, defines “big data analytics as the buzzword of 2012.” He also offers his views on how big data will change EPM. Marr defines EPM as “collecting, analyzing and reporting of data to support management decision making.” Marr says big data (or “messier forms of data”) will give us “more data to play with, analytics for everyone and technology change.” Read the article for his extensive introduction to how this is good for EPM.
The Experts
The BI and data analytics pros we mentioned above are among the standouts on Twitter, but a newer feature from Topsy sorts tweets by experts. Here are the top three for data analytics and two very interesting experts for March.
  1. Brett Stupakevich – One of our own, Brett is the clear leader with 196 mentions on the topic of data analytics. Kudos!
  2. Marcus Borba – Brazilian BI consultant and author of the Business Intelligence News blog. Celebrating four years of blogging, Borba takes second with 56 mentions of data analytics.
  3. TDWI – The Data Warehousing Institute makes the list of experts for its 32 mentions. This IT industry resource focuses on research, education and events in the BI and data warehousing space. An interesting analytics-focused happening is the TDWI Summit on Agile BI and Analytics coming up June 25-28 in Toronto.
Two Interesting Data Analytics Experts
  1. Robin Bloor – Bloor is a self-proclaimed writer with several blogs and a background as a technology analyst. He showed up in our Experts search on Topsy with 14 mentions regarding data analytics. His Twitter feed is full of useful BI and data integration info as well as Words You Don’t Know.
  2. Michael Bloomberg – Mayor of New York City and apparently a data analytics expert. We suspect that his tweets contain the word “data” or “analytics” but not both. We also think that this post on how cities can use data analytics to maximize tax dollars could have caught a little March Twitter traffic. (It’s an interesting read and it’s obvious the beta Topsy experts tool needs a few refinements.)
As always, here’s your convenient list of BI and data analytics pros to follow on Twitter:
