Author and marketing guru Seth Godin makes a strong case for business intelligence and analytics in his recent blog posting, “When data and decisions collide.” Seth’s premise is that sometimes, despite overwhelming data, hunches don’t match the data in front of us. Data mining, business intelligence and analytics make accessing and analyzing data much easier, but perhaps don’t necessarily make the decision-making easier.
In his blog, Seth wonders “how long it will take us to get our arms around this avalanche of insight.” The avalanche Seth is referring to is the information gleaned from business intelligence and analytics. In reality, many, many businesses have already conquered the avalanche of information and are making intelligent business decisions based on analytics. And the decision-making may not be as difficult as Godin posits.
