Transform Energy 2014 – The Value of Shared Experiences

Reading Time: 2 minutes

By Steve Farr, Oil & Gas Industry Expert

Everyone in our industry attends functions, conventions, and shows that hint at the future of data analytics. Sure, we go to shows, but let’s be honest: who really remembers every detail of every presentation, 12 months earlier on a particular day?

Very few people.

But, sometimes you do. And when that happens, it’s because the presentation is insightful and has a deep impact. And that’s just what happened to me at last year’s Transform 2013.

Transform Energy: Then & Now

My Wow moment happened during the presentation of the MaraDrill project from Marathon Oil. Just the other day, a colleague brought up that his use of Spotfire on top of OSI PI made quite an impression. And the presentations from Chevron and Apache were unforgettable – causing much debate and inspiring many insightful questions.

The overwhelming theme of Transform Energy is “We’re doing this with Spotfire. What have you done?” There is a genuine sense of inquisitiveness about how this product is being used – what people have achieved using this software, and how different organizations are connecting and mashing up all sorts of data sources to see all sorts of new insights.

Sharing Our Wow Moments

That feeling comes from the Spotfire team, too. What drives our team and inspires our long work days is just that phenomenon: when we see what some of the oil and gas companies have done with the product and we get to share in the Wow moment.

Another Wow moment happened for me last year. I sat in on a petroleum buyer’s demonstration and saw the Opportune Netback Analysis demonstrate the negative elasticity of demand. The devil is in the detail – and often the devil will assume a pleasing shape in a Spotfire visualization.

Adaptation and the Way Forward

Two years ago, our oil and gas customers came to us and asked for better mapping capabilities.

In 2012, we purchased Maporama to bring us closer toward this goal. And in 2013, it was striking just how many of the Transform demonstrations looked at the analysis of oilfield and reservoirs and physical plant and machinery (including drill rigs and bits, drill paths, compressors and pumps, and pipelines).

This year, we will announce the next step forward. It will be a great stride forward for all those oil and gas customers who have made significant investments with Esri and Spotfire, helping to draw these two technologies together into a GeoAnalytic whole. And we look forward to sharing this Wow moment with all of you.
