We’re Entering the Machine-to-Machine World at Full Throttle

We’re still in the early adoption phase of machine-to-machine (M2M) technology, but its promise is already abundantly clear.M2M Magazine Cover

This is a world in which machines and devices collect and share information with each other to help businesses deliver operational efficiencies, respond to consumer demands quickly and create new revenue streams. We’re talking about everything from delivery trucks that report their locations and speeds to vending machines that phone home when they’re running low on potato chips.

Inderjeet Singh, our SVP who oversees engineering for all our infrastructure products, has a few ideas about how to inject the two-second advantage™ into the M2M ecosystem, enabling businesses to use the right information at the right time to act preemptively for competitive advantage.

As Inderjeet points out in the February edition of M2M Now, the missing link in the vast M2M ecosystem is situational awareness. These smart, connected machines generate tons of data, but how do you find the gold in them? By using a real-time, event-enabled platform, businesses can process millions of events in their M2M environments, then analyze and correlate them to derive situational awareness, which can then be used to inform decision-making and drive action.

We’re talking about processing millions of smart meter events to monitor energy usage, analyzing diagnostics generated by personal medical devices to help monitor patient well-being, and delivering an offer your customers can’t resist as they swipe their credit cards. In all these cases, the key is to leverage contextual awareness in the business environment of M2M to gain real-time intelligence and raise business performance.
