New Payer Interoperability Rules and Your Digital Transformation

On March 9, 2020, two agencies under the US Department of Health and Human Services—Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC)—released complementary final rules on interoperability and information blocking.

The rules change how healthcare delivery organizations, health insurers, and patients exchange health data. At the heart of the rules is a patient-centric approach, the MyHealthEData initiative, that enables patients to take control of their healthcare data through Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) and other standards.
