Challenge

Operating mainly under the Hotelbeds and Bedsonline brands, Hotelbeds Group connects 35,000 travel intermediaries in more than 120 source markets to travel providers in over 180 countries who represent more than 120,000 hotels, 21,000 transfer routes, and 12,000 activities.

"The dynamics in our industry are affected by agreements and partnerships that can bring unexpected changes to the market, which is already influenced by world events," explains Bruno Rodriguez, API evangelist. "Changes are never ending. We have to keep up on events because you never know what can happen, what can drive the market. Our main goal is to provide quality services information throughout our booking websites.

"Our first goal was quota control. Customers were sending a massive volume of requests to our system and overloading our infrastructure. Because we couldn't handle the volume, customers were disconnected, so they couldn't book anything. Obviously, we were losing money. We needed API management.

Solution

“Our main audience is business partners, specifically clients' technical departments that access our recommendation product. We could no longer rely on massive walk-in traffic. We needed to manage it in a more efficient way. Our 10 years' old API was based on XML. We decided to create a new innovative API, the state of the art in the travel industry. In an increasingly competitive world, we really needed a cloud solution like TIBCO Mashery®. We compared at least three or four API managers and made the decision. It was, for us, a way to stay on top of it.

"Now with TIBCO BusinessWorks™ and Mashery, instead of disconnecting customers, we just reduce their quota. They can still complete bookings, and our systems are not harmed. Our API, which is RESTful, is easier to use than the others on the market. The platform handles up to 430 million data requests per day from users worldwide—that's around 6,000 data requests a second at peak.

"Mashery allows us to have a portal where developers can log in using their Mashery credentials, and those credentials transfer to our internal CRM system. Mashery changed our processes so that our client experience and CRM process are related. We can now quantify and manage accounts and access to our API. "We have a set of reports that are tracking key metrics in our system to be sure that the enhancements are real. One of the metrics is continuous monitoring. That's a key feature because it shows the difference in simplicity from the older implementation. The simpler it is, the faster it should be, and we are quite sure we are achieving that.

"We are committed to investing in our cost-effective, revenue-generating technology to open new markets and attract new clients. It's an important differentiating factor and the key to our success. We are planning other new features and releases this year and next."
