Luca – Data as a Force for Good…and For Fun

About

There are 6 billion mobile phones in the world—and 80% of in them in developing countries are generating a huge amount of data that can be used for good.

LUCA, a Telefonica business unit focused on big data, enables corporate clients to gain insight from data. But the BU team also believes that mobile data can be used for social good. In fact, it contributes to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals for 2030—to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.

For example, using mobility analytics, LUCA generates insights on natural disasters allowing NGOs and governments to optimize emergency response and predict health pandemics and pollution in major cities. It also finds poverty indicators to understand economic challenges in developing countries.

But LUCA also uses data for fun. The team uses the API from the hugely popular League of Legends e-game  and TIBCO’s data visualization software to better understand player and team behavior to improve the performance of riders in cycling’s Tour of Spain.

Join Pedro A. de Alarcon, head of big data for social good at LUCA as he walks us through practical examples of using data as a force for social good…and for fun.
