Kamarble offers an interactive solution as part of the presentation—because we spend as much time preparing a presentation as we would preparing a report using Spotfire. As an example, we were giving a demonstration, and suddenly the conversation turned from technical to business matters because interesting facts start to show up right away, and they start asking questions. I was basically out of the conversation because they were discussing business issues among themselves. Then they suddenly wanted to see how the stock market was affecting their operations. But with Spotfire, instead of doing a lot of processing to get it right, two or three clicks and you have it. Other tools are very good at presenting data, but you need an additional tool to do the data wrangling. If you have a nice looking visualization, but the data is wrong, it's kind of useless. Tableau uses a third party tool for the data preparation that Spotfire already has in one single package, out of the box. You have the visual aspect and a powerful statistical engine. And now with HTML5, you can integrate all kinds of data and customize everything.
"Customers have structured and unstructured data, sensor data that they want in real time, and other types of data—temperature, humidity—that comes with geolocation. I was in a meeting where one guy asked 'Can you plug the device locations on the map?' I said, 'Yes, we can do that.' He says, 'OK, I'll be back,' as if he thought it would take a while. He was joking—but it took just a couple of clicks.
"My customers benefit because it's so easy to get data from different data sources. Another great feature is the OData connector where you can just copy-paste the link to get all the data right there in memory out of the box. If there is no connector available, as long as the data source is RESTful through some custom API, you can parse it and present right away with a little scripting. Or you might get lucky finding a connector, someone already made, because with Spotfire's API flexibility and extensibility is not just a tool, but a platform.
