Dutch Railways is the principal passenger railway operator in the Netherlands. A private company solely owned by the Dutch government, it provides rail services on the Dutch main-rail network and international rail services to other European destinations.
“Our ambition is to deliver more reliable and better services to customers and other stakeholders, which is what we call the ‘virtual train,’ says Hans Tonissen, program architect. “Trains need control IT, or intelligent train technology, for safe driving, which the train supplier provides, as well as comfort IT, or virtual train technology, for everything else: travel information, real-time monitoring, and services for maintenance and control unit staff. Until now, train suppliers delivered all this IT, so each type of train (and we have nine of them) had their own IT environments. It was hard to make it work together and maintenance was very expensive.”
Dutch Railways used TIBCO streaming analytics, in-memory computing, integration, and messaging software to build its intelligent IT and virtual train foundation.
“Now you can download the travel planner app and see where all the trains are. The IT is the same in all the trains, so it’s very easy for us to deliver new applications, and that is a really big change from the past. No other train company does that,” says Wim Liet, program manager for IT on trains.
In addition to improvements in customer experience and predictive maintenance, the IT team has been asked to participate in almost 50 projects that will provide more value to business teams because of information now available through its TIBCO technology.
