Business Process Management Standards

As business process management (BPM) becomes more and more pervasive, companies are realizing that standards are important to the effective widespread deployment of BPM. There are several initiatives underway to establish consistent means of defining, exchanging, and executing business processes (such as BPMN, XPDL, and WS-BPEL), but standards in this are evolving rapidly.

  • As a founding member of the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC), TIBCO participates in the most visible effort to date to define standards and interfaces for workflow and BPM. WfMC has published five interface points for workflow process definition tools, workflow client applications, invoked applications, workflow interoperability, and administration and monitoring tools, and TIBCO has demonstrated conformance to all of them. In particular, process definitions created by TIBCO Business Studio™ are stored and exchanged using the XML Process Definition Language (XPDL).
  • The Object Management Group’s (OMG) Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) has become a popular notation for defining business processes, making them easily understandable by all BPM participants from business analysts and process implementers to end users. TIBCO Business Studio uses BPMN as the notation for defining business processes in its BPM solutions. TIBCO continues to participate in the evolution of BPMN with the BPMN 2.0 initiative.
  • TIBCO was an active participant in the OASIS WS-BPEL technical committee that resulted in the release of WS-BPEL, which was more suited to SOA applications than BPM applications that involved human interaction. WS-BPEL 2.0 is supported by TIBCO ActiveMatrix BusinessWorks™ BPEL Extension. OASIS is continuing to evolve the BPEL specification to support application in a fuller BPM solution through its WS-BPEL4People and WS-Human Task initiative in which TIBCO is participating.
  • UML (Unified Modeling Language) is an object-oriented design language established several years ago by the OMG to provide common ways of diagramming processes. The Business Object Modeler Editor component of TIBCO Business Studio is a UML class diagram editor that may be used to define the data that is produced, managed, and consumed by business processes.

Web Services

The two major platforms for the development of web services are Java EE ™ and Microsoft® .Net. However, web services can also be created as wrappers or integrations of existing applications or services. Integration tools and technologies will play an important role in driving the evolution of web services by helping to convert existing assets into web services and to integrate web services into existing business processes. Web services standards include SOAP, UDDI, and WSDL.

  • TIBCO's expertise in the area of XML and legacy of pioneering service-oriented and event-driven architectures make TIBCO uniquely capable of providing robust support for web services integration and coordination.
  • TIBCO is leading the drive to enable web services by implementing bi-directional interoperability between TIBCO's existing products and web services infrastructures.
  • TIBCO is also integrating its workflow, process automation, and interaction management capabilities into a unified framework for web services enablement and coordination.
  • With its Extensibility group, TIBCO has experience in semantic management and mediation, an area that will become increasingly important as enterprises attempt to construct business processes from independently created web services.

Mainframe Technologies

Mainframes, or "enterprise servers," continue to be an extremely important part of enterprise IT. Over 70 percent of corporate data still resides on mainframes and that data obviously needs to be integrated as it impacts many of the fast-moving business processes associated with real-time business. TIBCO enables the seamless integration of mainframe applications into dynamic business processes. Standards supported by TIBCO include IMS, CICS, OS/390, AS/400, DB2, COM, CORBA, and MQSeries.

  • For simple data transfer between mainframes and other enterprise systems, TIBCO provides OS/390 and AS/400 versions of its messaging software and adapters for leading mainframe protocols such as IMS and CICS. TIBCO also provides adapters for files and instances of DB2 that reside in mainframe environments.
  • Beyond these messaging and adapter solutions, TIBCO provides a product that non-invasively enables mainframe applications to send and receive messages to and from non-mainframe applications in real time without relying on or waiting for batch processing and communications.

Legacy Technologies

The evolution of enterprise computing has seen many network transport technologies come and go, including COM, DCOM, and CORBA. Existing installations of products such as IBM's WebSphere™MQ (formerly known as MQSeries) may remain a stable part of a customer's solution, even as they implement new systems with TIBCO's enterprise backbone technologies. TIBCO provides customers cost-effective messaging systems that are easy to deploy and manage, highly scalable and adaptable, and interoperable with third-party products.

  • TIBCO's solutions provide bi-directional connectivity to third-party products, allowing currently integrated systems to share their information and services with systems outside of their domain.
  • In many cases, TIBCO's enterprise backbone software can dramatically enhance and extend the functionality of currently integrated systems, while reducing cost and administrative overhead.
